The state visit of UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to Germany underscores the strengthening strategic alliance between the two nations, which has evolved over decades through political, economic, energy, and cultural collaborations. Established in 1972, the diplomatic relationship between the UAE and Germany has flourished, with trade and investment emerging as pivotal areas of cooperation. Last year, bilateral trade surpassed Dh57 billion ($15.52 billion), positioning the UAE as Germany’s foremost trading partner within the Gulf region.
Approximately 2,000 German companies, including prominent corporations like BMW, Siemens, ThyssenKrupp, and Deutsche Bahn, have a presence in the UAE. The energy sector marks another significant area of collaboration, as both countries engage in joint efforts on renewable energy, climate action, decarbonization, and energy security. In 2022, an agreement was forged between the UAE and Germany to bolster energy security and industrial cooperation, entailing UAE liquefied natural gas supplies to Germany and collaborative projects concentrating on clean energy and climate initiatives.
Beyond trade and energy, the partnership extends to research, technology, infrastructure, and cultural exchanges. A strategic partnership agreement, formalized in 2004, further elevated political ties, encompassing regional security, economic cooperation, and research. This agreement has been instrumental in broadening the scope of collaboration between the two countries.
Despite facing global political and economic challenges, UAE-German relations have remained resilient. Both countries continue to expand their cooperation across strategic sectors, reflecting the enduring strength and depth of their partnership. The ongoing collaboration in diverse areas highlights the mutual commitment to not only sustain but also enhance their bilateral relationship.
