World leaders have convened in New York for the 81st United Nations General Assembly, where discussions are expected to be dominated by conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine, the rapid development of artificial intelligence, and the future of international cooperation. The high-level general debate is scheduled to take place from September 22 to 26 and on September 28, with significant attention focused on these global issues.

U.S. President Donald Trump and other notable leaders are set to address the assembly, using the opportunity to engage in diplomatic meetings concerning ongoing international disputes. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy plans a significant meeting with Trump during the session, aiming to address the ongoing war in Ukraine, which remains a major topic of concern. The conflict’s impact on civilian populations and the broader implications for global food and energy security are high on the agenda. Russia’s status as a permanent UN Security Council member continues to complicate potential actions regarding the conflict.

The Middle East conflict, particularly involving Iran, is another central focus due to its repercussions on regional stability, energy supplies, and international relations. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are among the key figures slated to speak on these issues at the assembly.

Artificial intelligence is also a pivotal topic, with UN Secretary-General António Guterres advocating for increased international collaboration and the establishment of common safeguards as AI technology evolves. The UN has previously created an advisory body dedicated to the governance of AI, reflecting the technology’s growing importance on the international stage.

Financial pressures on the United Nations and its capacity to effectively address global crises are under scrutiny, as well. The United States recently contributed $725 million towards its UN obligations, thereby maintaining its voting rights in the General Assembly, while simultaneously calling for reforms and budget cuts. Additionally, Guterres is set to leave office at the end of 2026, adding an impending leadership transition to the assembly’s discussions.
