US Imposes Up to 100% Tariffs on Drone Imports Citing Security Risks

by admin477351

The United States has unveiled new tariffs aimed at certain drones and drone components, with rates reaching up to 100%. This move, announced due to concerns over national security and a desire to lessen dependence on foreign supply chains, particularly those dominated by China, marks a significant shift in US trade policy. The targeted items include unmanned aircraft systems, especially those larger than 25 kilograms and equipped with national security-related features like thermal cameras and docking stations, which will face the highest tariff. Meanwhile, smaller drones will incur a 25% tariff.

Additionally, the US has expanded the scope of its tariffs to include drone products and parts from several key trading partners. Imports from the European Union, Japan, Liechtenstein, South Korea, Switzerland, and Taiwan will be subject to a 15% tariff, while those from the United Kingdom will face a 10% tariff. These tariffs apply provided that the hardware, software, and technology originate from the listed countries or the US. The tariffs are set to be implemented by September 3.

The Biden administration emphasized that these measures are part of a broader strategy to bolster the US defense and industrial base. By encouraging domestic drone manufacturing, the government aims to create American jobs and reduce the country’s reliance on foreign suppliers. Currently, China holds a significant portion of the global drone market, with companies like Shenzhen-based DJI dominating the US commercial drone sector. DJI has previously been subject to US restrictions due to national security concerns.

US officials have highlighted potential risks associated with foreign-manufactured drones, including issues related to surveillance, sensitive data collection, and possible attacks. The Federal Communications Commission has also advocated for increased domestic production to mitigate these risks. This tariff strategy surfaces amid ongoing trade and technology tensions between Washington and Beijing, who have also imposed restrictions on drone exports to the US and targeted several American companies.
