New Sharjah-Oman Corridor Reduces Cargo Transit to Just 35 Days

by admin477351

Sharjah has unveiled a groundbreaking logistics corridor with Oman, dramatically cutting cargo transit times from nearly three months to just 35 days. This strategic initiative is aimed at enhancing supply chain efficiency, reducing transportation costs, and bolstering trade connections between the UAE, Oman, and broader regional markets. The corridor links Sharjah to key Omani ports, such as Sohar, Duqm, and Salalah, via the Khatmat Malaha and Al Madam border crossings. Officials anticipate even shorter transit times as the corridor continues to develop.

To make the corridor more appealing to businesses, Sharjah has introduced toll exemptions for cargo trucks using the approved routes from Oman. The initiative also offers expedited customs clearance, streamlined cargo movement, and the flexibility for businesses to complete customs procedures at inland container terminals rather than at border crossings. Authorities predict that these measures could lower logistics costs by approximately 15%, contingent on the type of cargo and the specific transportation needs.

The newly operational corridor, which began facilitating cargo movement on May 14, supports Sharjah’s broader strategy to reinforce its status as a regional logistics and manufacturing powerhouse. With over 3,000 factories contributing to about a quarter of the emirate’s GDP, this improved trade route is expected to enhance export capabilities and attract international investors eager to tap into markets across Africa, India, and Asia.

The corridor’s operation is strengthened by coordinated customs procedures, real-time data exchange, and dedicated fast-track shipment lanes, ensuring efficient cargo movement in both directions. This development is particularly advantageous for manufacturers, as it accelerates the transportation of raw materials and finished goods, thereby enhancing the emirate’s competitive edge in the global market.
