In a significant escalation of tensions in the Middle East, the United States has resumed military strikes on Iranian targets after a brief cessation, prompting fears of a broader regional conflict. The renewed hostilities were triggered by Iran’s targeting of a U.S. military base in Jordan, where American troops are stationed. The U.S. Central Command reported that over the course of two hours, American forces conducted strikes on numerous sites associated with Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps. These strikes targeted military command centers, missile and drone facilities, as well as coastal defense and surveillance locations. In the aftermath, Iranian officials confirmed explosions on Qeshm Island near the Strait of Hormuz and in Khuzestan province, with state media reporting that at least two individuals were injured.
This latest round of military action follows previous strikes on Iran-backed militias in Iraq, during which multiple fighters and Iranian advisers were reportedly killed. The escalation in military activity has sparked heightened concerns that the ongoing conflict might expand further across the region.
Efforts by international mediators to revive negotiations between Washington and Tehran have stalled, adding to the uncertainty. Meanwhile, global energy markets have reacted with heightened sensitivity to the renewed tensions. Brent crude oil prices surged by more than 7%, reflecting concerns over potential disruptions to oil supplies through critical Middle Eastern shipping routes.
