Dubai International Airport (DXB) is set to maintain its status as the busiest international airport globally, despite experiencing a notable drop in passenger numbers in the second quarter of 2026. The decrease is attributed to regional conflicts and disruptions in flight operations. During the months of April through June, DXB managed a passenger volume of 13 million, a significant decrease from the 22.5 million recorded in the same period the previous year. Overall, the first half of the year saw passenger traffic drop to 31.5 million, marking a 31.3% decline compared to the previous year.
Nonetheless, optimism remains high among airport officials. Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports, is confident that passenger numbers will rebound in the latter half of the year as international airlines resume their services and local carriers such as Emirates and flydubai re-establish most of their routes. The airport anticipates handling approximately 70 million passengers throughout 2026, a reduction from the 95.2 million served last year. The goal of reaching 100 million annual passengers has been deferred to 2027.
Currently, DXB’s operations have recovered to about 86% of their former capacity, with 56 airlines now operating out of the airport. This is a decrease from the approximately 90 airlines before the regional conflict affected aviation activities. The airport is optimistic about further recovery, particularly during the winter travel season, when more international carriers are expected to restore their flight schedules.
Key passenger markets for DXB continue to include India, Saudi Arabia, and the United Kingdom. These markets are expected to play a significant role in the airport’s recovery efforts as airlines gradually resume their operations and travelers return to the skies. The ongoing adjustments and strategic planning by Dubai Airports highlight their resilience and commitment to regaining momentum in the global aviation sector.
