Iran and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are taking steps to mend their relationship, according to Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. Following a meeting with Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Khaled bin Mohamed during the BRICS Summit in New Delhi, Pezeshkian expressed optimism about future cooperation. He stated that both nations are committed to moving beyond their past disputes and focusing on future collaboration, particularly in addressing regional tensions and enhancing security and shipping routes.
The upcoming regional security meeting in Oman on September 14 will bring together Iranian officials, representatives from Gulf countries, and Iraq to discuss security issues and the strategic Strait of Hormuz. The agenda is expected to include initiatives to improve understanding and strengthen collective security among these nations. Notably, Bahrain has announced it will not be participating in this meeting.
In addition to regional diplomacy, President Pezeshkian highlighted the importance of economic collaboration among BRICS nations. He advocated for increased use of national currencies in trade and the development of more robust financial mechanisms. Pezeshkian argued that the current global financial and trade systems expose emerging economies to undue political and economic pressures, and he urged BRICS countries to bolster economic resilience and cooperation in opposition to unilateral sanctions and attacks on civilian infrastructure.
Pezeshkian also emphasized Iran’s potential role in facilitating trade and energy links among BRICS economies, citing the country’s strategic location, energy resources, and transit networks. As tensions remain high around the Strait of Hormuz, these diplomatic and economic initiatives underscore the importance of regional dialogue and cooperation for ensuring security and maintaining global energy supplies.
