In a bid to spur momentum in peace negotiations, President Donald Trump has warned Ukraine against stalling. Speaking on Thursday, Trump highlighted the risk of Russia changing its negotiating stance if a deal isn’t struck soon. This warning comes just days before a Russian delegation is due in Miami for talks with US officials.
The weekend meetings in Florida will see Trump’s representatives, Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, engage directly with Moscow’s envoys. This follows a prior session in Berlin where US negotiators met with Ukrainian counterparts. The flurry of diplomatic activity suggests a concerted push by the US administration to broker an end to the conflict.
Trump’s comments in the Oval Office revealed his concern about the durability of any potential agreement. He noted that the parties are “getting close to something,” but cautioned that time is a spoiler. “Every time they take too much time, then Russia changes their mind,” Trump observed, urging Kyiv to seize the current opportunity.
The major roadblock to any swift deal is the irreconcilable positions on territory. Ukraine maintains it will not cede land to Russia, viewing the recovery of the Donbas and other occupied territories as non-negotiable. Russia, however, insists that territorial concessions are essential for peace, showing firmness in its demands during preliminary discussions.
Currently, Russia holds Crimea and parts of Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson. The Kremlin has gone as far as demanding a Ukrainian withdrawal from the Donbas region. With US officials noting that Russia has shown little willingness to compromise, Trump’s push for a quick deal raises questions about what concessions might be expected to bridge such a vast divide.
